Travel back with us to a simpler time where strong-willed mothers, aunts and governesses routinely beat the stuffing out of wayward youths with a variety of dual-purpose household items.
We asked Miss Shanelle of spanXproductions to tell us a little about the antique carpet beater in this picture. (While perhaps not her favorite spanking implement, it does photograph wonderfully.)
“The carpet beater I am using is very old and made of thin, smooth, intertwined willow. People used to hang their carpet beaters near the back door so that on cleaning day they could throw their rugs over a line and beat the dust out of them. It is very effective for that purpose!
“As an implement, it is quite weighty and — due to its large surface area — lands rather haphazardly on a bent-over bottom. The top edge can catch high up and the lower edge hits the tops of the thighs. I try to flick it in so that the lower edge catches most of the bottom.
“Most bottoms I have used it on don’t like it, as it doesn’t have a swishy sound and there’s no sweet, stinging sensation. Most agree that the carpet beater delivers a dull thud, with the top and bottom bits stinging just as the center lands.
“It can, however, leave loopy marks if used with force on a bottom hasn’t been warmed up prior, if that’s what the receiving person requires.”
